Cubeb Essential Oil
Cubeb Essential Oil Latin name: Piper cubeba
Synonyms: Cubeba officinalis, cubeba, tailed pepper, cubeb berry, false pepper
Plant family: Piperaceae
Extraction: Steam distillation of the unripe, but fully grown, fruits or berries
Origin: Native to Indonesia, cultivated throughout south east Africa.
Plant characteristics: An evergreen climbing vine up to 6 meters high with heart shaped leaves. Similar to the Black Pepper plant but the fruit or seeds of the cubeb plant keep their stem – thus their name the tailed pepper.
Cubeb Essential Oil characteristics: A pale green or blue liquid with a warm-woody, spicy, slightly camphoraceous odour
Traditional use: Traditionally the seeds are used as a domestic spice and also for treating genitor-urinary infections.
Cubeb Essential Oil blends well with: Ylang Ylang, Galbanum, Lavender, Rosemary, Black Pepper, Allspice and other spice oils.
Cautions and comments: Non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitising
Main chemical constituents: Mainly sesquiterpenes and monterpenes which include caryophyllene, cadinene, cubebene, sabine.
How to Use
4-5 drops in bath, on tissue or in a vaporiser. 15 drops in 50ml carrier.
WARNING – do not apply undiluted or internally. Keep away from children and eyes. Store in a cool, dark place.
