Bergamot has been recommended in aromatherapy for the treatment of stress-induced anxiety and depression.
A study conducted in 1995 found that Bergamot oil blended with Lemon and Orange Oils was an effective anti-depressant. 20 depressed inpatients split into two groups both taking their anti-depressant medication, but one group was exposed to the bergamot and citrus fragrance whilst having their medication reduced. By the end of the 11th week 9 of the 12 patients in the Bergamot and citrus group had reduced their medication intake to zero while the other three had reduced their dosage to 50-75%. The results suggest that the use of citrus fragrances such as Bergamot may improve homeostatic balance. The authors concluded that bergamot could be of psychoneuroimmunological benefit. (Komori T et al. Effect of citrus fragrance on immune function and depressive states.Neuroimmunomodulation 1995: 2(2): 170-180. Cited in Quintessential Aromatics database, 2013)

Eucalyptus Staigeriana in aromatherapy has been used to calm anxiety (Price and Price, 2011). This could be due to its content of limonene, which makes up between 1 and 14% of Eucalyptus Stageriana oil.
Limonene constitutes 1-14% of Eucalyptus Staigeriana. It has been shown to exert sedative and anxiolytic effects (de Almeida et al., 2012), which may explain its reported calming effects. Citral is another major component, citral has been shown in studies to exert antidepressant effects (Komori et al., 1995).
